All the guests have gone home. The house is quiet--too quiet. Christmas 2010 is but a memory. We had so much fun. My abs still hurt from all the laughing. Mason was so fun to watch Christmas morning.

I feel like I should have a New Year's resolution. I know I need to lost weight and finish more projects but with returning to college, my time is a little uncertain. Let's just hope that 2011 is a happy, healthy and fulfilling year!

Quilt Festival is here again

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Quilt Festival begins Wednesday with Preview Night. I took Friday off so I could hopefully beat the crowds. Lots of shopping, lots of quilts to see. I am soooooo excited.

Thirty years ago today as I was getting ready to go to church...BOOM... I remember the sound. As in every disaster I sat glued to the TV watching the constant stream of pictures and video. The one thing that bugged me was the old man that refused to leave, Harry Truman. They kept referring to him as "crusty". What exactly is that? The mountain was his life and he gave it up for the mountain. Rest in peace Harry

Yup, it's true. I have indeed had a finish. My first attempt at machine quilting was a little to be desired but it felt so good to sew on the binding for my little Mason's cowboy quilt. Never mind he's nearly two. A finish is a finish!

Sue Garman

Sue Garman spoke at our monthly meeting of the Sugar Land Applique Society yesterday. Sue is the designer of the block of the month quilts featured on Alex Anderson/Ricky Tims' Quilt Show. She is an amazing designer as well as quiltmaker. She had a lot of her quilts on a powerpoint but she is also a great speaker. She told us how she is inspired to design. She's quite funny. If you have a chance to hear her speak--Go!!
Oh, she has a blog too. A lot of her pictures are on her blog so there is no need for me to post those here. Go see.

Have you seen this post from BunnyHill about YoYo's? I read a suggestion a while back from another blog to save your scraps each year of the projects you do that year. I have a container of 2009 scraps. Wouldn't it be cute to do Anne's idea using the scraps for each year's projects. You could have a 2009 jar, a 2010 jar, etc. Too cute!!

Unnecessary Body Parts

Urrrr! As one of our last hurrahs before school starts again my husband and I went to Mississippi to visit his mom. In case you don't know it feels like they fry everything but water in Mississippi. We enjoyed a lovely fried catfish meal until it upset my little gall bladder. Two days later I had another attack. Long story short is I had my gall bladder removed Wednesday. As I am a school nurse, school started for staff yesterday. Uhhh, what a mistake to try and return to work a day and a half after surgery. Needless to say I will be reclining most of the weekend. No quilting for me. I will never finish...

Sister's Update

I'm back from my trip to the Northwest. Ahhh, warm sunny days, cool nights...

I had a great time with my mom and sisters. Lot's of quilt related activity with mom. I wish my sisters sewed.

Our trip to Sisters was nice but it seemed as if there were fewer quilts this year. They were spread out throughout the town which made for a lot of walking for mom. She did pretty well for 73 years old.

Don't Hate Me

I am wrapping up my three week vacation in the Pacific Northwest. Today we head to Sisters for the best Outdoor Quilt Show in the world! I will snap many pictures and will post when I return on Tuesday. I have had a fabulous time with my mom and sisters. Mom and I started out the vacation by going on the Western Washington Quilt Shop Hop. It is the largest shop hop in the US and maybe the world. We visited 52 out of 56 shops. On this hop the stores give you most if not all that you need to complete their block. Makes for a nice quilt. It is so fun and of course beautiful seeing the scenery in Washington. I recommend everyone go next year. See you there!

I am obsessed with reading other people's blogs. I don't comment much except if someone is having a give away I am interested in. Lo and behold, I won. I commented on a give away by Willowberry Designs http://www.willowberrydesign.typepad.com/ and won a gorgeous one of a kind hand done piece to be backstitched. I am so excited. I never win anything. And it's one of a kind. I will have something no one else has. I can hardly wait to get it.

My baby turned 26 yesterday. It was a great weekend. She flew in from Washington, DC for her birthday and Easter. Mostly she flew in to see her nephew who she calls "Roadie". His name is also a major road in our area. He is the cutest. Love ya, Liza Jane.

Two Lips

For the past year my Applique Society group has been exchanging "two lip" blocks. We chose a very easy pattern and a different color each month. At each of our monthly meetings our members would bring in several blocks in the chosen color. The blocks could be entered in the raffle or could be donated to become a charity quilt at the end of the year. Depending on how many blocks were entered several people could be chosen to win the blocks in the raffle. A block would be drawn out of the bag of entries and if it was yours you would win all or some of those in the bag.

Last month we brought out all the "common good" blocks that were to be assembled into charity quilts. We are making small lap quilts. I decided to take a group of "non-traditional color" blocks and assemble them. Pictured above is my final product.

Happy Valentine's Day. Had dinner at home tonight with my sweetie. We spent most of the day painting the kitchen of our new house. It looks like hot chocolate. It rained most of the day but we need the rain. No sewing today with all the painting.

On his very first day of daycare my little grandson Mason got his first discipline referral. Is it possible an eight month old baby can hit another baby? Yup. He got a little excited with his toys and hit another playmate. The daycare wrote up an "incident report". Silly. This little precious thing couldn't hurt a fly. Mimi loves you Mason. Don't worry. Your daddy got in trouble his first day of school too.

In the beginning...

After living vicariously through many, many other blogs I have decided to jump into the fray. I have noticed how talented other quilters are, the friendships forged and inspiration gained. I hope to gain all of the above.
So first...a little about me. I am a 50 year old woman, an empty nester with a son and daughter. My son is married and has an 8 month old son. I am the happiest "Mimi" alive. Mason is an absolute delight and I can't get enough of him. My daughter lives and works in Washington, DC. I miss her terribly ( she has been there 3 1/2 years). We scrapbook together when she comes home. It's the only time I scrap.
I am a school nurse at a high school. Every day is different. Some days are great and some not so much.
In my spare time I love to quilt. My earliest recollection of quilting is as a fourth grader cutting up scraps of my mom's fabric and trying to sew it together. I was not too successful in that endeavor--imagine trying to cut even squares with scissors. I learned to sew, mostly clothes, from my mom and of course in home ec. I took a beginning quilting class in 1980 at Daisy Kingdom in Portland, Oregon. I've been quilting ever since. I have also smocked, tatted, and tried my hand at tole painting. I always come back to my first love--quilting.
The name of my blog-- I am the worlds greatest starter of quilts. Finishing is another story. I have a huge stack of tops (or flimsy's) but none have been quilted and bound. That's my goal for this year.
